Extraction! Comix Reportage: mixing comics and journalism about mining
[Montréal, Québec, Canada 1°C] New technologies and new forms of web distribution open up possibilities to republish past works to new audiences and give them new lives. Below is a book that was published back in 2007 at a print-run of only 500 copies. They sold like hotcakes and quickly disappeared from bookshelves, bookfairs and are now occasionally seen in second-hand bookstore windows.
A friend of mine just send a link to a new comic he published using Issuu to render it available online. It gave me the idea of rescucitating old publications that were send to obscurity long before their time.
Cumulus Press took 4 journalists, sent them on assignment to each investigate a mining project by a Canadian company in 4 extractive sectors: GOLD. BAUXITE. URANIUM. OIL. Their reportages were converted into scripts destined for graphic interpretation. The scripts were given to 4 award-winning comics artists to illustrate and EXTRACTION! is the result. Comics journalism has never been the same!
Featuring comix artists: Joe Ollmann, Phil Angers, Ruth Tait & Stanley Wany. With reportages by Dawn Paley, Petr Cizek, Sophie Toupin & Tamara Herman. With added artwork: front cover by Alain Reno, back cover and inside chapter intro images by Jeff Lemire & inside cover and spot images by Carlos Santos.
